Our History

History

Over 70 years ago, some young veterans of World War II had a dream that began when they sponsored a dairy show on September 10, 1949.Although done on a small scale, it was the beginning of what is now the Prince William County Fair.

This young group of veterans was soon to find out the perils of starting a fair. In just the second year, the fair suffered and was in debt. Although some were ready to give up the quest, the Farm Club members began searching for a money-making project to clear their debt before the next fair in 1952. They planted forty-seven acres of corn. After finishing their normal chores at home, they met and worked together in the cornfield. The Farm Club members harvested an abundant crop. The final day of harvest ended at3:00 AM. They succeeded and the debt was gone. Their dream was still alive.

Knowing that the fair needed to take another step forward, in 1956 the club bought a sixty-four acre farm on Route 234, just south of Manassas. Today, this is home to the Prince William County Fair. The next few years brought about the addition of a commercial building and a showbarn. In 1962, there was a record attendance of 70,000.

Additional land was purchased to aid with the ever-growing attendance. The Mini Barn was added, plus a new clubhouse for the Veterans Farm Club and its auxiliary, which is still inconstant use throughout the nine days of the fair. The Prince William Veterans Farm Club was incorporated in 1971. The veterans who volunteered their time laid the foundation for what is now Virginia's largest county fair. Their dream survived the early years of debt and near disasters.

The Prince William County Fair is a well-known event throughout the state and welcomes both young and old each August.

A special tribute should be paid to Joseph Johnson, who managed the fair for forty-six years. His leadership, hard work and foresight was a major player in the success of this fair. Our hats go off to you Joe and to all those World War II Veterans with a dream!
